Christmas Conundrums: Eating Out

The season of indulgence and with it the inevitability of uncomfortably tight waistbands is upon us once again. As we head out to restaurants, bars and cafes to celebrate the season with family and friends the lack of waistline friendly options can be intimidating to even the most determined dieter!
Well fear not! Here are a few easy ways to enjoy all those work parties, Christmas lunches and end of year celebrations without exposing yourself to the extra guilt or calories:
- Avoid going hungry to parties. Eat something light and nutritionally dense that includes some protein before you go out. This will increase feelings of satiety (fullness) to reduce your chances of snacking on high calorie party food.
- Where possible, fill up with foods which include vegetables, protein and whole grains as these foods will fill you faster than others and will ensure you eat less empty calorie.
- If all else fails make the best choices available to you. Go for smaller serving options and ask to hold the sauces and dressings.
- Alternate alcoholic drinks with water and try drinking still or sparkling water out of a wine glass, you’ll feel much more involved!
Watching your diet over Christmas can be tough, but the additional stress you place on yourself by feeling guilty because dinner didn’t end up being the low calorie affair you had in mind will make things much tougher. Remember, make the best choices you can and focus on enjoying time with your friends and family over the holidays, that’s what they’re all about after all!
